Cross-country skiing

Mike and I tried cross-country skiing for the first time on Saturday. We found a great deal through Utah Winter Games: $10 per person for equipment rental, a 60-minute group lesson, and additional time to use the ski trails.

I didn't take my camera, so you can picture me like this:

Ha ha! I wish I looked like that! I was doing more of a beginner's shuffle during the times I wasn't waving my arms around trying to keep my balance. It was fun, though, and neither of us broke anything, and it was a great workout. Someday I'd like to do more of it.

I learned a few things:

- Just because I did a little bit of downhill skiing 20 years ago, that does not mean I can get right back on skis and feel confident. I can already trip over my own feet without even trying, and adding a 6-foot slippery ski to each foot doesn't do anything to improve my balance.

- Falling down is a bigger deal than it used to be. You would think the extra cushioning I've accumulated would actually help with that, but apparently not. And getting up again is a bit more of a project than when I was a teenager.

- My muscles do not like being used in new and interesting ways. They are telling me so right now.

On the other hand, once I got used to the skis and the movement, there were actually moments when I felt like I was gliding along somewhat gracefully. And I remembered one of my very favorite things about skiing -- the quiet. It's beautiful to be out in the cold, fresh air, with snow all around, on a trail without too many people nearby, and stop and listen to the silence.

Sounds like a lot of fun even though your muscles weren't too thrilled with the idea. I know that my legs would be killing me too. I read in the church news that a stake in Magna UT did a winter youth conference. Did Mary get to participate in that or was in a neighboring stake? It sounded like a TON of fun. If it was your stake, I need details. Have a great day.
