White Stallion of Lipizza

White Stallion of Lipizza by Marguerite Henry, 1964, illustrated by Wesley Dennis

I would have loved this children's book when I was growing up and reading everything I could find about horses. The main character is Hans, who lives in Vienna near the school where the Lipizzan stallions and their riders are trained. Hans is just a baker's boy and has difficult family circumstances, but he dreams of being admitted to the school. And he does something about his dreams. After study, work, and patience, he finally earns the chance he's been waiting for. The drawings (on almost every page) make this book even more fun to read.
